What Makes A Good News Story?

what's news
“When a dog bites a man, no one cares. When the man bites back – now that’s a news story!”

As this old saying from the news business illustrates, something “newsworthy” is anything out-of-the ordinary, novel, shocking, sad or outrageous. Newsworthy stories are those that tug at your heartstrings… make you chuckle…inspire you to do something for others...make you angry at injustice...make you say WOW!

For example, your grandmother turning 90 years old (as lovely and cute as she might be) isn’t necessarily newsworthy.  However, if she is celebrating her 90th birthday by jumping out of an airplane with all of her grandchildren- now we’re on to something! Or if your grandmother is turning 90 years old against all odds, because she has been fighting a rare disease for years and is considered a medical miracle by her doctors.  These types of stories, commonly referred to as “human interest,” are exactly the types of things we want to hear about.  The media could use a lot more positive stories to tell these days...

Is there something interesting happening in your community?  Is your group, school or nonprofit doing something really cool or unique?  Is there a hero in your community? Are you an academic with new research or discoveries?  Tell us your story and we might be able to help you get in the news. Please refer to the guidelines for submitting your story prior to contacting us.
